Programmes

The Institute offers the following main programmes:

  • A two-year Diploma in Communication Studies
  • A four /three year B.A. in Communication Studies
  • A two-year B.A. in Communication Studies programme for graduates of the Institute.

Diploma in Communication Studies
The Diploma Programme which consists mainly of Social Sciences, arts and Communication subjects provides an opportunity for students to develop their potential in any of the specialized areas in communication. Specifically, graduates can further their education or work as professionals in any of the areas like TV, Radio, On-line Journalism, Wire Service, Newspaper/Magazine Journalism, Public Relations, Advertising or Marketing.
Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Communication Studies
The Degree Programme in Communication Studies offers a concentration of media-focused course mixed with social science and arts education. It is designed to enable students combine study areas from the social sciences and the arts, with theoretical and practical communication studies.
The programme is organized to give undergraduates a professional choice in either Journalism or Public Relations. Accordingly, all students enrolled in BA Communication Studies Degree in Communication Programme will pursue one of the two sequences.

  1. Journalism Sequence

The Journalism programme prepares students for careers in Radio and TV, On-line Journalism, wire service, and newspaper /magazine work.

  1. Public Relations Sequence

Students enrolled in Public Relations are prepared for careers in Public Relations, Advertising, Marketing and Customer Service.
Two-year Programme from Level 300
The Ghana Institute of Journalism also runs a two-year Programme starting from Level 300. The objective of this programme is to afford the Institute’s past students holding Diploma Certificates to further their education in Communication Studies.

Academic Calendar
Our academic calendar starts in September every year and ends June the following year. This period is divided into two semesters with breaks in between. 1st Semester, September - January. 2nd Semester, February – June.
Certificate Courses (Short Courses)
The Institute runs short courses during the year in the evening basically as refresher courses for practitioners and as introduction programmes for beginners.

Congregation
Students should have passed an approved course of study involving course-work and also passed mid-semester examinations.
Students will also be expected to undertake project work and present a 25-page dissertation as part of the graduation requirements.
Practical Training
External
Students are placed on attachment to media and communication related organisations to gain practical experience for a total period of two months after the first year for Diploma students and after Level 300 for Degree students.
Internal
The students produce the following publications on quarterly basis. ‘The Communicator’ provides general information on student academic and extra curricula activities, ‘PR Today’, a publication on public relations-related events and ‘Life Style’, an exclusive fashion and social magazine. GIJ TV, a closed circuit TV transmission unit on campus run programmes from Mondays to Fridays on news, sports, newspaper reviews, motivational talk shows among others.
